This is a low stance that can be held for time as an isometric contraction. This builds strength and stability in the lower body, but also mobility, endurance, and control. And this is why horse stance is a secret weapon not only for martial artists, but anyone that wants to develop powerful, functional movement. Many of us have lost the ability to seamlessly transition between levels and planes of motion. Can you drop into a deep squat, shift into a cossack squat, then stand up on one leg? All without pain and discomfort? A couple of heavy lifts entirely in the sagittal plane and with limited range of motion won't get you there. But this, to me, is what performant legs should look like. The horse stance is also a great tool for developing willpower and the mind muscle connection. I forgot to mention in the video that Ma Bu was also sometimes used as a form of punishment!
