One of the big questions looming around photographers is 'will AI be a friend or foe'? Is it going to help artists or hurt them? In truth, I really have no idea! My approach, however, has been to use AI as a resource for inspiration in my work. So far I have used it to help me build mood boards, plan compositions, create inspiration for headpieces, and more. In this video, we utilized AI to inspire the makeup for this look! I partnered with an incredible makeup artist Marika D'Auteuil (@lapetitevengeance) who has already started to curate collections of AI makeup inspiration. She has put together the IG feed @illusorybeauty that includes a range of her digital, AI work in the fashion and beauty realm. In fact, she has been invited to create a digital campaign for a major makeup brand and to create an editorial for a major magazine... ALL from her AI work. I invited Marika to create some visual AI references of makeup for our collaboration, and then we both added our own stylistic adjustments. You can see how the overall makeup placement, model choice, and even the mood of the light were inspired by the AI image! For these images I shot with the Canon R5 with the Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM. I shot with 3 strobes, all Profoto D2s. Let me give a breakdown of the lighting: Main Light: I placed a 3ft octabox in a short-light position to create Rembrandt light on the face. You can see the tiny triangle of light just under the eyes. Fill Light (right): As a fill light to the right of the frame I used a bare head (no modifier) with a blue gel. Fill Light (left): For the final light to the left-hand side of the frame I used a 10-degree grid (to control the spill) and a magenta gel. The final piece of this equation was shutter drag! I used a long exposure (1/10 sec) to allow some modeling lights to register and create streaks of light.
