Chris Minns won the NSW state election a few weeks ago, which has probably left you wondering what the implications of his win are. After all, Chris Minns was a very vocal critic of the Perrottet government when it came to such projects as the Sydney Metro, WestConnex and tolling reform. He’s already announced a lot, like a review into Sydney Metro, as well as putting many projects on the chopping board. So should we be worried, or can we be cautiously optimistic? For example, Minns has pledged to build new rolling stock in Sydney, and not have it imported. Actually he campaigned heavily on this promise. It does mean more local jobs, and that's a win, but I'm not entirely sure that building it in Australia will have a tangible effect on the transport network, hence its omission from the video. I've somehow made it over a year with barely any mention of active transport and cycling on this channel. It's something that I think needs a lot of work in Sydney - a part of why I've never mentioned it is because cycling infrastructure in my area is non-existence, so I barely ever think about it. That should really change. I recently watched a FriendlyJordies video where he describes how the housing crisis is not caused by a lack of supply but rather by poor legislation that favours investors over first-home buyers (capital gains tax etc.) This is not at all my area of specialty so I wasn't about to try and talk about it in my own video. I'll go away and do some thorough research before one day tackling the housing crisis issue in a dedicated video. I'm honestly a LOT more cynical about the housing crisis than I probably conveyed in this video. We'll see what happens. Light rail wise, I have many ideas. Extend the Parra Light Rail from Dundas to Macquarie via the Eastwood County Road corridor, extend Stage 2 from Sydney Olympic Park to Strathfield, create a light rail along Parramatta Road, extend L2 to Coogee and L3 to Maroubra or even further to La Perouse. I'll make a dedicated video about this sometime. I forgot to mention train investment. Liberal were very firm when it came to only building metros and no new train lines. Do I agree with this? No not entirely. For example, it makes more sense to extend the Southwest Rail Link than to convert it to metro. Metros have so many advantages but they'll be realised in dense existing areas/areas upzoned for densification, rather than in rail corridors that already exist and need to be converted. So I do hope Labor's win means the SWRL is extended rather than converted as this makes more sense. I also didn't mention HSR because I'm currently working on a video on that which will hopefully be out by the end of the month!
